A new description for HrHJ (2020) No. 8.26.53.5

My friend Peter Burbules recently drew my attention to the following: The coin Elagabal HrHJ (2020) 8.26.53.5 "Elagabal, lion walking r." differs considerably from his other types showing a lion. While the mane of the others is very smooth, the hairs of this one are shaggy and stand up. If one compares this picture with the Denarius Caracalla, RIC VI, 283c " Lion, radiate, walking l., carriyng thunderbolt in jaws", the great similarity is striking.  Even the 3 rays from the throat of the lion on Elagabal's coin remind of the rays of the thunderbolt! The picture on Caracalla's coin symbolizes the sun god El Gabal of Emesa.  Since Elagabal himself was the high priest of El Gabal, it is quite possible that the coin from Nikopolis took over this allusion.

I think that this assumption has a lot of merit. Then the description should have to be changed to "Lion, radiate, walking r.".

Jochen,

#060: Fantastic new type!

Can you see exactly what Nike is doing with her right hand? That detail is unclear to me in the image.

I recently acquired the coin below from Dorney Auction 11, 30 Nov. 2020, lot 164, AE28, 13.89g according to dealer (coin is still underway). Is Dorney right to call it unpublished?  I would be surprised if he has the latest edition of your Nicopolis book. The rev. die is apparently the same as p. 133, top coin (Septimius Severus) in your 2012 edition.

Thank you for your words about my coin. It was a must to get it. It looks like Nike touch the trophy. But I don't have the coin in hand. I hope that  then I can see more.

A new die combination for Domna (or a correction?)

AE 17, 3.52g
obv. IOVL DOM - [CEBACTH]
       Bust, draped, r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT - PROC ICTRO
Crescent with 1 small star in the cavity
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1485 (1 ex., Paris)
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020):
          rev. No. 8.17.48.1
          obv. e.g. No. 8.23.47.3
Savoca Coins, 92th Blue Auction, Lot 1121, 19.12.20

The obv. of No. 8.17.48.1 is not readable. So it could be the same legend. Then it would be a correction.

AE26, 12.1 g

obv: AVT K M AVR ANTWNEINOC
rev: VP NOBIOV ROVFOV NIKOPOLITWN (PR)C in field ICT R / ON

The reverse of this specimen is the same die as the one shown in HHJ.
The difference is that the legend is fully seen on my specimen and reads ...LITWN (PR)C ...,
ie ligate PR and O missing.

A difficult specimen, the obverse is what it is, but the reverse is nice.

Dear clueless!

Thank you for your additions.

#073 is Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020) No. 8.26.36.9 corr. (has PROC)

#074 is not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020):
                     rev. No. 8.23.35.15
obv. e.g. No. 8.23.7.15 (same die)
The obv. can be found if you compare the ribbons hanging down from the wreath!

#075 is already listed in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020) under No. 8.17.35.6
Therefore I have deleted this number from the list and renumbered the other one

#076 (now #075) is Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020) No. 8(?).10.48.17 var

Hi Jochen,

I did re-examine #077 and your reading seems to be correct.

I have been lately finally going through years of accumulated coins from Nicopolis, at the moment >100 pcs that I haven't previously photographed, properly attributed and entered into my database and I have still a nice bunch left to process...

Hi clueless!

Your last coin is Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020) No. 8.25.8.5 (same dies). Dionysos is holding a kantharos in his lowered r. hand.

With your permission, I have edited the images of your coins a little, in particular taking out the blue cast. That way Mr. Jekov can more easily transfer them to the next issue.

The rev. has the full ethnicon NIKOPOLITWN, which is very rare in Ulpianus. The only other known type for Severus is HrHJ (2020) 8.14.31.6 (Kybele), which has ICTR in ex. I have therefore adopted this for my coin.

Another example of a parallel issue for members of the imperial family, this time for 3 of them. Possibly a copy for Geta will turn up as well.

Note:

Dr. Jekov pointed out to me that the coin of Aurelius Gallus with Kybele for Septimius Severus was already listed in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020) under No. 8.14.31.1.  I don't know how I missed the illustration on page 103. Maybe it's my age?

I had to delete the number #099.

Dear clueless!

Thank you for this interesting coin. It is a new die combination for Caracalla. The obv. I have found under HrHJ (2020) 8.18.36.15. There the legend is cited as MAR AV K - ANT(WN)IN with WN ligate. I have no other pic than this one in HrHJ (2020). So I have adopted it for your coin.

A correction for Elagabal

Elagabal, AD 218-222
AE 27, 11.07g, 26.83mm, 0°
struck under governor Novius Rufus
obv. AVT K M AVRH - [ANTWNEINOC]
         laureate head r
rev. VP NOBIOV ROVFOV NI - KOPOLITWN PROC ICT
        in l. and r. field RO - N
Tyche Euposia as City Goddess, wearing mural crown, stg. l., holding cornucopiae in l.
arm and rudder in  outstretched r. hand; on the cornucopiae a small child (Ploutos) std.
        l.!
ref. a) not in AMNG:
rev. cf. AMNG I/1, 1972 (different die breaks, doesn't mention Ploutos nor mural
            crown!)
            obv. AMNG I/1, 1968
       b) Varbanov cf. 4090 (doesn't mention Ploutos!)
       c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) No. 8.26.38.19 (plate coin)
coll. Hoeft

Because Tyche Euposia here doesn't wear a kalathos as usually but a mural crown she should be called "Tyche Euposia as City Goddess"! This is very rare. I know only one other type, for Commodus from Markianopolis.

Jochen,

"I have played a bit with color and contrast. I hope you can agree."

No problem, I'm well aware of the hue produced by my light source and I haven't been able to solve that problem without editing the pictures themselves.

Cheers,

Dear clueless!

Thank you for your posts.
The coin of your post #185 shows a coin now in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020) as No. 8.14.38.12 (same dies)
The coin from your post #186 is already in Nikopolis Addenda #8 as #70 but with different weight. The rev. is NIKOPOLIT - WN PROC I.

I have corrected the numbers in your post.

Best regards
Jochen

Thank you for posting. I think it is actually HrHJ (2020) 8.18.6.3, where your coin is better preserved than the depicted coins. And the rev. seems to be from the same die as Severus 8.14.6.9
