I have this
Carausius antoninianus. It's a RIC 1C
obverse type,
IMP C CARAVSIVS
P F AVG,
bust,
radiate, draped and
cuirassed, right.
The
reverse is
MONETA AVG,
Moneta stg. l. holding
scales and
cornucopiae with absolutely no
mint marks in either
field or
exergue. I looked at the
exergue under a lot of magnification and there is no room for a mark here based on the contour of the
border and there does not appear to have ever been a marking in this spot.
Cohen lists this
type as C.175. But I cannot find its equal in RIC Vb. The two closest coins are (I think):
- RIC 284 (page 488), but it would have a S/C in the fields and a C in
exergue.
- RIC 470 (page 503), but it would have S/C in the fields with no
exergue.
I also considered unattributed
Moneta coins RIC 854 to 866 (pages 533 and 534), but none have a 1C
obverse.
I know I am not mis-reading the
obverse under an 8X loupe, it's very clearly the 1C
type.
Is it possible this coin is simply
not in RIC Vb? Or am I missing something?
