AE17 Apollo and galloping horse evading identification
« on: November 19, 2017, 05:59:19 am »
Dear all,

aometimes even or rather the not so rare depictions on coins can make identification difficult.
This one, for example puzzles me:

AE17.
Obv.: Head of Apollon right
Rev.: Jumping or galloping horse right.

The inscription particularly puzzles me. I read:  :Greek_Delta: :Greek_epsilon: :Greek_Lambda: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Tau: :Greek_Omega:
Which doesn't make sense to me.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks in advance!

The tail looks more like lion.

I see above the animal:   :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Pi_3: and possibly also
beside the head:Greek_Omicron: so the ethnic maybe reads:

  ?  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Pi_3: :Greek_Omicron::Greek_Lambda: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Tau: :Greek_Omega: :Greek_Nu:

and letters behind are possibly initials.

Thanks for your Input.

@pekka, you are right with the  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Pi_3: to the left of the animal.
I had totally overlooked this. Sharp eyes you have! The letters are clearer when you have the coin in Hand.

@shanxi: I agree the tail is unsually long and thin for a horse, but I can see clearly hooves and the shape of the legs make a horse more probably (though the head is missing).

I still can't resolve the ethnicon, however, so I am still grateful for any input.

I am still working on this coin.

I think I have figured out, that it is NOT Apollon on the obverse but Dionysos, and that reverse might show a panther, like this coin:

The ethnicon is still illegible for me and I would appreciate any further ideas!  :)

Thank you!

Hi zoser,

thank you for your guess - I think you got it, at least as closely as possible.

And I was wrong again... :)

And what is with the two letters to the left of the animal? They do not really fit into ΑΜΦΙΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ  :-\ .

The two letters don't seem to be in line with the others. On the top, left to the Π, I think I can - coin in Hand - read the letters ΦΙ. That would fit.

The two letters in question could be something like magistrate's Abbreviation or something of the like. I did not quite find an exact match, so there remains some doubt still.

It vexes me, that such a relatively well preserved coin proves so difficult to attribute...
