Domitian, Thyat(e)ira?, Nike, AE18
« on: August 19, 2007, 11:38:01 am »
Hi all!

AE18, 3.35g
obv: DOMITIAN[], laureate head right
rev: (from 10h to 7h counterclockwise) IPNWN, (from 3h to 5h) VL[?]O

Am I correct with Thyat(e)ira as the city?

A pretty good match, from Isegrim (which does not map the legend-divisions):

PRO: LYDIA
PO : THYATIRA
PZ : Between 83 and 96
 Obverse
VSG: DOMITIANOS KAI SE GERMANIKOS
VT : PORTRAIT MAN R / DOMITIAN
VA : WREATH LAUREL
 Reverse
RSG: T'YATEIRHNWN
RT : WOMAN WALKING L(1) / NIKE(1)
RA : WREATH(1) / BRANCH PALM(1)
 Technical details
M  : AE
GR : 19.05(1)
 Bibliographical references
ZIT: BMC 16 S303,70(1)
 Additional remarks
FR : VS: DOMITIANOS KAI SE GERMANIKOS RS: T'YATEIRHNWN

Thank you!
I will try to get used to ISEGRIM, though it's not easy.
I found another one that seems identical to me, but with different references.

ERD:   AM
PRO:   LYDIA
PO :   THYATIRA
PZ :   Between 83 and 96
   Obverse
VSG:   DOMITIANOS KAI SE GERMANIKOS
VT :   PORTRAIT MAN R / DOMITIAN
VA :   WREATH LAUREL
   Reverse
RSG:   T'YATEIRHNWN
RT :   WOMAN WALKING L(1) / NIKE(1)
RA :   WREATH(1) / BRANCH PALM(1)
   Technical details
M  :   AE
GR :   20(2)
GEW:   4.6(1)
ST :   01(1)
   Bibliographical references
ZIT:   SNG TUEBINGEN 3851(1) / COLL HOMMEL(1)
VGL:   SLG WADDINGTON 5353(2) / MIONNET 4 S157,895 <3>
   Additional remarks
FR :   VS: DOMITIANOS KAI SE GERMANIKOS RS: T'YATEIRHNWN

So can I use all these references for my coin or is there something I overlooked?

Isegrim seems to be inconsistent in the way it lists multiple specimens of a single issue; sometimes they're combined in one entry, and sometimes they're not.  Among multiple triggers for such separate listings I suspect different sizes and weights play a part; the first (BMC) entry is for a coin of 19 mm, and the second is for two or more coins measuring 20 mm instead.  Since they share so much else, your 18 mm coin and these others should all probably be assigned to the same Isegrim entry; would the users of such coins value them any differently based on just a 1 mm discrepancy?
