Ancus Marcius portrait of the day.
« on: August 04, 2019, 08:21:21 am »
A 56 B.C. Republican silver denarius that is struck off centre, and with the ANCVS inscription on the obverse only faintly visible.  But the portrait of the legendary fourth king of Rome is simply wonderful.

L. MARCIUS PHILIPPUS, (c.56 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (4.01 g), obv. Ancus Marcius head to right, ANCVS and lituus below and to left, dotted border, rev. PHILIPPVS behind equestrian statue to right on an arcade of five arches, within A Q V A M[AR], flower below horse, (S.382, Cr.425/1, Syd.919a, RSC Marcia 29)

That is one of my favourite portraits as well.
I had to part with my own example a couple of years ago, and it was sold
again last week (I bid for it, but the software failed me, grrrrr).
I hope you don't mind me adding my own (former) example to yours.

Thanks everyone. That was a really nice example Walter, I can just imagine what it must be like to miss buying it back due to a technical glitch!

Even ancient coins that are supposed to be in good supply, have an uncanny ability to become rarely offered as soon as you put them on a wish list!

Best regards,

Steve
