variants of Justin II follises SB 360
« on: July 05, 2014, 07:01:36 pm »
Hi

On the market we can often stumble upon the follises of "Justin II and Sophia", SB 360, same also for his half follises SB 361.

Wildwinds notes that there are over 492 variants ( combinations) known for SB 360. Is there a documentation where we can find them all ?
I am interested to find a document which can help managing a growing collection of SB 360 and SB 361 - years, mints, rarity if possible ...

Thanks

You could buy this:

Hahn, Wolfgang and M.A. Metlich. Money of the Incipient Byzantine Empire Continued (Justin II - Revolt of the Heraclii, 565 - 610). (Vienna, 2009).

tk

....and look for your collection for a copy of this  ;D

Ah, yes. The variant with a cross between the imperial heads is really quite uncommon, isn't it? And having a  :<a href='http://www.forumancientcoins.com/catalog/roman-and-greek-coins.asp?vpar=810&pos=0' target='_blank'>Chi-Rho</a>: instead of a  :<a href='../numiswiki/view.asp?key=cross' target='_blank'>cross</a>: probably increases scarcity still further.

Thanks. Do you know of any online free resource ? Even if it is not complete, at least it should be more complete than Wildwinds, and structured. An Excel sheet would be just fine, if it exists. I would not buy a book just for this :)

no.
halb-follis types:
MIB 44c: star-christogram
MIB 44d: christogram

Your coin is the common MIB 44d. The coin, I showed, has a retrograde (!) star-christogram.
