Is this Manuel I? The reverse matches up very well but I'm not sure about the obverse. I have the damndest time w/ Byzantine trachys! ???

Thanks joma - I spent over an hour trying to identify it thinking it was Mary holding the infant Jesus before I realized it was Christ holding the Gospels!! ;D

It is Mary...
The one with Jesus is Sear 1963, but this coin has a distinctively different reverse (sceptre instead of labarum and plain cross on globus
while at Sear 1964 we have a patriarchal (double) cross on globus.

It is -

- to give an exact classification:

"petzlaff" no. 3.3e1-040 (7/6) - means:

7 jewels on manakion (collarpiece),
plain sceptre shaft,
Chlamys hem below globus with 6 jewels,
Globus cruciger with patriarchal (double barred) cross,
Tablion clasp: one jewels within single (unjewelled)  half-circle

One of the most frequently found varieties of Sear #1964 / D.O.C. 12

The coin was struck in so called secondary main officin "B" (Constantinople)

cordially
Stefan
