cotd Constantine
« on: January 02, 2006, 06:08:49 pm »
I was happy with this Constantine:
CONSTANTI-NVS MAX. AVG. rosette diademed bust right;
GLORIA EXERCITVS  soldier (or emperor) standing front, head right, holding reversed spear and leaning on shield.
symbol in left field, CONS in Exergue (what is this symbol, by the way???)
as far as I know Constantinople 16

Hello Frans,
Your coin is RIC 22 (16 is laureate). That is an S in the left field.

Hi Frans,
The S-like symbol represents the archaic 6th letter of the greek alphabet digamma. This is the officina - 6.

Strictly speaking it's not a digamma - Google for "digamma stigma" if you're interested.

Thank ypou both, Victor and Ben,

I made an excursion into the digamma-stigma area, and I must say if I ever so so many contradictory opinions, it is about this subject! But I am now convinced it is the Greek numeral for 6!

regards,

Frans
