« on: June 15, 2020, 08:53:44 am »

Now I got the 1st copy of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, 2020. It contains altogether 2676 types on 544 pp., all described and depicted b/w. Usually the coins with the countermark Δ on one side carry on the other side the countermark NIKO (Howgego 553). This is the first coin I know that carries only Δ..

Prof. Jekov has mailed me he thinks that the countermark is of Odessos in Thrace.

A new "barbaric" imitation for Caracalla

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 16, 2.62g, 15.83mm, 180°
obv. AV[....]R - [...]NIOC
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev, [...]NO - PRO POL[...]
Crescent with 3 stars: 1 star in the cvity, 2 stars on the horns
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov "020):
          cf. No. 8(?).18(?).48.1
coll. Hoeft

I think because of the recognizable letters on the rev. it is most probable that NIKOPOL PROC is meant.
