New variety from Nicopolis ad Istrum /3 ?
« on: September 05, 2015, 09:03:06 am »
Dear Board,

I have here a new reverse type for Geta from Nicopolis, Eros standing left with crossed legs, leaning on a torch with small base.
A similar type with Eros standing right etc is known in a couple of varieties.

The obverse legend seems to read A C K GETAC while the reverse reads NIKOPOLIT PROC ICT

Diameter is 18 mm and weight is 2.7 g

The coin isn't listed neither in AMNG/I nor Varbanov. Varbanov lists a type 3233 described as winged genius etc but with different obv/rev legends, different obv bust etc.

Any comments appreciated,

Clueless

Dear clueless!

Here is my description:

Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Geta as Caesar, AD 198-209
AE 18, 2.7g
obv. L CEP K - GETAC
Bust, draped (and cuirassed?), seen from front, bare-headed, r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT - PROC ICTRO
Eros, nude, winged, with crossed legs stg. l., leaning with crossed arms on narrow
column, holding with r. hand burning torch downwards
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov (engl)
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015)
rev. No. 8.14.16.13 (Severus, central coin, same die?)
obv. e.g. No. 8.22.52.2 (not the same die, C of GETAC square, but EP looks similar)

(1) Obv. legend: The last letter of the 1st part can be read as K. The letter before is surely a P. And that fits the known legend L CEP K. And now I see a faint L and C at the beginning of the obv. legend. So not A C K but L CEP K!
(2) Rev. legend: The rev. is very similar to Severus HrHJ (2015) 8.14.16.13. May be the same die? The legend is NIKOPOLIT - WN PROC
ICTRO.

Best regards

Thanks  ! Sometimes one can almost be driven crazy when figuring out a partial legend :)

Yes, you are right, the reverse die seems to be so similar that it is probably the same die as for SeptSev.
