Cunobelin

Hi,

Don't recall seeing Celtic here for a while so I thought I'd post my two new coins of Cunobelin:

AE unit
Obv "CVNOBELIN"
female head left
Rev "TASCIO"
Metal worker seated right
VA 2097; BMC 1972-83; Mack 248

AE unit
Obv "CVNOB"
Head of Jupiter Ammon right
Rev "CAM"
Lion crouching on a panel right
VA 2107; BMC 1991-7; Mack 253

Cunobelin appears to have died c.40 AD, shortly before the Claudian invasion. The style of both coins is such that they betray the influences ofthe Roman world.

On the second coin the abbreviation CAM on the reverse is for CAMVLODVNVM, or Colchester (with potential Carausius liks 250 years later). I like the mint names on such coins and also have a silver unit of Eppilus with the word CALLE, short for Calleva, modern Silchester, on the reverse.

It would be nice if the top coin showed a metal worker making coins but on better preserved specimens they appear to be working on a vase.

Regards,

Mauseus

I have not seen many Celtic coins, and the ones I have seen did not have portraits.  Most were silver and hammered.  This is interesting and thanks for showing it!

Best, Noah

So far I had only seen the silver coins of the period and this was quite an eyeopener for me.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi,

Thought I would take the opportunity to post another bronze of Cunobelin that I have just purchased.

Obv: CVNO
Winged horse right
Rev: TASCI
Victory right, holding knife, sacrificing bull right
VA 2099

Please note that the obverse and reverse are swapped around in the photo below.

Regards,

Mauseus

Congratulations! I can see the Pegasus Horse of CVNO but the TASC on the reverse blurred.
