Why do I love NGC slabbed coins?  Because they make huge mistakes and if you know what you're looking for there are deals to be had.  Here is a coin I recently acquired.  Advertised as an NGC certified coin.  It said it was an ancient plated forgery.  The style looked good and the picture showed no signs of plating so I took a chance.
The price was on the high end for a fouree but cheap if it was original.  After some discussion with David to confirm my own opinions I bought it.  Well it arrived today and as suspected shows no signs of being a fouree but a solid official example from Ephesus and actually a rarer variant.  Needless to say I immediately broke it out of the slab and it is now free!  Keep your eyes open...

In a strange twist of irony I also bought this Divus Vespasian with quadriga reverse as an official example.  When it arrived it was clearly an ancient forgery!  :D  No big deal, it's still a nice coin and it was cheap!

So it's not so much slabbed coins you love, but shoddy attributions that work to your advantage.  Or, more precisely, the confluence of the two.

Congrats.  Nice coin.

Thanks!

Here's a pic of what old Vespasian looked like all locked up in his plastic prison.  It does look like broken plating but it's just shadows and toned silver.  In hand and in the picture above you can see it is clearly solid. You'd think they could see that before they encase them.  I've seen quite a few coins described as plated that are genuine in plastic cases.

I thought you were an Antony man.  From the looks of your recent additions, you've become a Flavian collector, and David and I are going to have to watch out  :)

Four new photos of old coins.  My new macro lens for the Sony Nex 5 is making me want to retake new pictures of all my coins!  I'm slowly going through them all.  Coins that looked mediocre in the past show more of what they look like in hand now.  Today had perfect natural light for shooting pictures through the window.

Vespasian Victoria denarius (wildwinds example):

Domitian with Minverva reverse denarius (Nice portrait!):

and

Quintus Fabius Labeo Republican denarius (amazing black toning):

I was getting tired of shooting my old coins when this new one arrived!

Very rare Vespasian denarius.  Only one specimen in Reka Devnia hoard.  It has the longer obverse legend.  Holed in antiquity, it still has a very pleasing portrait and the reverse SPQR is still clearly visible as is the wreath, acorns and spikes.

Purchased very, very cheap!

I was getting tired of shooting my old coins ....

Sometimes I feel that way about my old coins too. Especially if they are corroded. Shoot them. Or have a train run over them as I used to do as a kid to halfpennies to make them penny-sized. That was risky and fun. It's kinda frowned on nowadays for kids to mess around active railway tracks. It shouldn't be. We all need to learn to deal with risk.

Didn't Annie Oakley shoot holes through dollar coins?

Someone must've felt some affinity for old Vespasian to wear this coin apparently as pendant. At least the hole doesn't detract from the overall appearance.
