Controverse Ilkhanid Coin conc. mint
« on: November 15, 2005, 05:13:27 pm »
Dear Friends

No one was able to ID the Beylik coin, lets see if I have more luck with this one.

I have this Ilkhanid Double Dirhem of Abu Said. The problem is with the mint. I have shown this to many experts. There are 3 different ansers I got.

The possible mints are Almur, Alamut and Ankur. What do you read?

My opinion is Almur.

Best wishes,
burak

Hi Burak;
I guess the mint is on the marginal legend and not in the middle,i can read very clearly:
Douriba madinat Shabankara....
I think the mint is clear:Shabankara

Hi Nassif

No, the mint is there. it is the highlighted and magnified field in the centre on the reverse. The ID is
Ilkhanid AR 2 dirham, Abú Sa`íd Bahádur, 33 y. IE

But it is argued if it is Almur or Alamut.

Thanks
Burak

Dear Burak;
I don't have any doubt of your capacity to read arabic legend,but you are not concerned by my response.

Of course I am concerned. Much more than my own reading. You are an expert in my eyes. I just wrote my reading.

Thanks for your input.

But I do not think it is Alamut. Please compare the image with these 2 images below.

The first image is an extremly rare Half Dirhem same date and Almur is the mint.
The 2nd image is Alamut and you can clearly read it on it.

The first image was taken from Ak Akce, sorry for the bad scan
The second image from Anatolian Coins

Now on my coin all the way up the Alef lam and vav are pretty obvious. So up to here we have Alm thats obvious. Though we have to determin if the last letter is re or te. I think it spells Almt to be honest but I think it was an engravers mistake, because the whole mint looks like Almur from the 1st pic below and not like Alamut from the 2nd pic below. Instead of going down the engraver went up and resulted a "te" instead of a "re".

I hope this makes sense. I am 70 percent sure this coin is Almur

Best wishes
Burak
