Geta with Hercules reverse - identification help
« on: March 27, 2021, 01:47:38 pm »
I have looked at the usual online sources, but could not find the exact match nor even identify issuing city for this Geta. I guess it will be easy for specialists here! Thank you in advance.

Creteia-Flaviopolis in Bithynia is the issuing city.

I can read ΚΡΗΤΙΕΩΝ ΦΛΑΟVΙΟΠ

The figure on the reverse seems to be Hermes with a purse in his right hand, like on other coins from Creteia Flaviopolis:

But I didn't find a reference for the coin from Geta  :-\.

Thank you Altamura. On second look, you are right - despite the figure's general posture resembling Hercules, the object in figure's left hand is too short for a club, and besides, while I thought that the object behind the head was an excess letter, it indeed is the kerykeion (caduceus) and then everything makes sense, Hermes it is.

This coin must be rare. It is 20-21mm and weighs below 4g.

I specialize in Bithynian provincials and I have never seen this type before.  I would love to be able to submit it to RPC for you.  Can you get the complete weight, measurements, and die axis (and maybe a better picture) and I'll send it in?

Thanks,
Tom

OK Tom, but getting the exact weight might take time. This is a modest coin and while it can benefit from some more cleaning, I doubt that a better photo would reveal any new detail.

In any case, I am fine with your submitting the coin to RPC.
