Rare denarius from my collection - featuring a muling of a Lucius Verus obverse and Marcus Aurelius reverse.

Obv: IMP L AVREL VERVS AVG.
Bare head right.
Rev: PROV DEOR TR P XVI COS III.
Providentia standing left, holding cornucopia and orb.

Hi,

Just added an as of Marcus Aurelius to my Diverse Roman gallery. It fits in my buildings and monuments collection as it purportedly represents the Lupercal, the cave of the foundation wolf/Romulus and Remus at the base of the Palatine. Dates to a short pariod, Dec (11th?) through to March 17 180AD.

Posting this the day after Prilia festival and the anniversary of the foundation, traditionally April 21st.

I am pretty sure that this example is a Byzantine weight of 4 nomismata. This denomination with such a marking is relatively rare but not unknown. The following elements are included in the marking:
1. the letter N (nomisma)
2. the letter Delta (number 4 twice)
3. a chi-rho symbol (simple style)
Unfortunately I can't find a known literary quote at the moment, but I'll keep looking.

That is a spectacular coin David! The artistry of the portrait reminds me of the famous "Alphaeus Master" coins of Hadrian. And the reverse is remarkable in its fine detail as well. Congratulations!

A poza tym cały ten wywód to propaganda  nafaszerowana przekłamaniami.

Z tym, że on tego wszystkiego nie pisze, na przykład, na swoim blogu, wyłącznie na swoje konto etc., ale mówi to w rozmowie z Bartoszem Węglarczykiem, naczelnym redaktorem Onetu. A Węglarczyk na to nie reaguje. Najwidoczniej imponują mu takie śmiałe refleksje.

Nie kojarzyłem w ogóle pana prawnika, więc poczytałem kto zacz i widzę że to gwiazda bankowości. Podobną (lecz na mniejszą skalę) gwiazdą był niejaki Ryszard P., który długo przed rozpoczęciem swojej kariery politycznej jeździł po bankach i udzielał światłych rad na różne, przeważnie biznesowe, tematy. Podejrzewam że już na tym etapie miał problemy np. z liczeniem królów przybyłych do Betlejem, ale najwidoczniej słuchającym go korpoludkom zupełnie to nie przeszkadzało.

Pewien stan mocno zawężonego postrzegania świata jest niestety dość charakterystyczny dla sporej grupy "młodych i wykształconych". Mogą np. zapytać, czy Szwedzi którzy zrobili nam Potop byli muzułmanami, bo "przecież mieli takie szpiczaste czapki" (to akurat pytanie zadano mi osobiście - zgłupiałem na tyle, że nie wiedziałem, co odpowiedzieć).

W sumie monetka bardzo ładna jak ne ten okres gdzie może 10 % zachowanych monet da się dokładniej zidentyfikować.

Właściwie to chyba czytelniejsza od wszystkich egzemplarzy na acsearch :-) Jak sobie wpisałem "Marcianus CYZ" to wyszło mi raptem pięć egzemplarzy (w tym jeden sprzedany dwa razy) i raczej wszystkie gorzej wybite albo bardziej wytarte.

Domitian's early coinage, especially the bronze, at times can showcase some extraordinary examples of Flavian portraiture. That is the case with my latest addition, an extremely rare accession type with a knock-out portrait! The reverse is rendered in fine style as well. To date, it's my favourite coin of 2024.
