Pottery Vessel Type, Origin, Date, Ref??????

(1/2) > >>

Joe Sermarini:
I don't even know what this unusual pottery vessel type is called, what it was used for, where it is from, when it is dated, or anything at all except it came to me from Alex Malloy many years ago and either he never gave me a description or I lost it. The size is 20cm (7 7/8")  tall, rim diameter 21cm (8 1/4"). Anyone know the type or anything else about it? Thanks.

Virgil H:
I don't know the answer, but this is intriguing. Is the bowl on top actually attached and can you tell if it was originally fired with the two attached? Or was it maybe glued on/attached after the fact? I am going to look in a couple pottery books I have, I don't recall seeing anything like this before. It looks like it had a very specific use.

Joe Sermarini:
It is one piece. I would call it more of a very large and strange funnel mouth than a bowl.

Kamnaskires:
I believe this may be a Daunian funnel krater/olla, Joe.

Joe Sermarini:
That's definitely it. Thanks Kamnasskires!
