Heraclides with hares
« on: September 17, 2011, 02:25:46 pm »
Hi!

This is a coin of Septimus Severus from Heliopolis in Koile, Syria, SNG Copenhagen 428. The rev. is enigmatic. It should show two Heraclides each holding a  hare. This description is from the seller.

Anyone who does know the meaning of the hares in connection with the Heraclides? My online search was unsuccessful.

Best regards

Presumably - one holds a deer and the other a fox/hare.

I want to add: The interpretation as Heraclides seems to be doubtful. Sometimes the two figures were simply called hunters.
