Friends
I've created a new web-page to include three of Michael
Crawford's older works (with permission): Surveys of Numismatic Research 1966-71 and 1972-77, and an updated notes to the
Edinburgh collection, about coin
types, all profusely illustrated throughout. Here it is:
http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/MHCSurveys.htmlBefore presenting the indexed contents of the new web-page (later in this note) here are a few personal comments:
1. The 1966-71 Survey is uncontentious in format and somewhat shorter in text than most Survey's given that
Crawford had just finished
writing "
Roman Republican Coinage" thus many discussion points are in
his new book. It is interesting however to see him devote some positive attention to artistic aspects and to typology, subjects that feature little in
his later
work.
2. The 1972-77 Survey is decidedly contentious and interesting. By posting it on my website I
hope to generate new discussion on the subjects within. It does not mean that I agree with all the subjects he discusses. For example my views on "estimating size of coin issue" has not been changed by the extensive discussion on the subject in this Survey.
Crawford is forthright in
his views in typology ("a
field where fantasy all to readily proliferates"), on collecting ("it was and is no
part of my purpose to
help collectors"), on the break-up of
hoards, and on numerous other subjects. Those who reviewed
RRC, most notably
Hersh's major review in NC 1977, can expect a robust response, specially on factual matters in cases where the reviewers did not read
RRC with sufficient care. But, look past the tone and there is a great deal to learn from the master. Given the large volume of material on this new web-page, I've indexed it to a greater level than most of my pages, as follows:
