Severed Head OTD
« on: November 20, 2006, 12:17:03 pm »
I really like this little follis of Maximinus Daia.  It's in great shape and has a beautifully rendered scene of Genius holding the rather detached head of Sol.  Surprisingly, this coin came in with a bunch of uncleaned coins that I got several years ago.

Obv: IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS PF AVG
Rev: GENIO AVGVSTI
Mint: Antioch
Diameter: 19.8mm
Weight: 5.15gr
RIC 164b

This is an enlargement of the reverse detail.  I'm not sure it really helps at all, but what the heck.

Not my period (and there certainly is some kind of syncretism going on) but I'd call that a bust of Sol.  I'll post a Sol holding the bust of Serapis: headdress here is the label, I think, though on mine Sol wears a fancy robe like that of SerapisPat L.

It is Sol.  I had the attribution correct, but had somehow had written down Serapis instead of Sol.  I'm just losing my head over this.  Of course, I could have always identified the head as belonging to Severed Alexander or Septimus Severed.

Nice subject .. You might enjoy my "Heads in Hands" page.

I think the most popular head to be held does belong to Serapis.
