Jugate busts on sestertius?
« on: March 29, 2023, 07:24:31 pm »
Hello Guys

I have a question about this sestertius which I found about 15 years ago with metal detection, never really paid attention to it because it is bad, but was looking at my junk bins again and came across it again, which did concern me then The main thing is that the emperor looks to the left, I have not found such sestertii until today, always looking to the right, I cleaned it a bit and now it looks like 2 busts are on top of each other?
at 11 o'clock I still see the letter V diagonally above the forehead

assume that it is difficult to identify, but it would still be great to know what it could be, despite the fact that it is worn

diameter is 33mm
weight 17.02 grams

Greetings Rens

Looks Flavian.  I don’t see the jugate bust, however.

Not a ssestertius because of the weight but I think I can make out VESP on the obverse (11 to 12 o'clock) and the portrait looks like it may be Domitian

The yellow is the real bust, the purple is an illusion.

I think they are both illusions.  There are no Flavian Imperial AE coins with busts on both sides

My guess would be a Titus sestertius heavily underweight due to wear and corrosion.

In this condition, you could never be certain or convince others.  The coin is essentially dead.

Normally jugate busts are seen along the same die axis. In this case, if two busts are to be seen, they are at an angle so it could be the result of a double stricking (on a flavian ? bronze).
