Chinese coin.. it's fake right?
« on: October 25, 2022, 04:40:47 pm »
Hi everyone, new to this forum and also just started to collect coins about 2 years ago (I'm in Bali - Indonesia, so all of my collection is Chinese coins).

Just today a friend gave me the following coin as a present. it's fake right? Because I have never seen both sides identical and also it's too shiny . Diameter 2.3 cm... Thanks a lot in advance!

And I think there is no Chinese on earth, who can read what these "hanzi" say  ;).

Haha! Thank you for your reply.. could anyone point me to a book about Chinese coins so I could start categorizing my collection.. so far I got a 1000+ similar to the following in all kind of sizes and styles.. usually I send a colleague to the local villages to hunt for grandfather's who are willing to sell their stash... But I am really lost and right now just put everything in a box, here are some samples..:

This one would be a good start...

Hartill, D. Cast Chinese Coins. (Victoria, BC, 2005).

Hartill is good, but some of what you have shown appear to be Vietnamese cash coins.  For those, looking on wikipedia is your best bet as the only really good book on Vietnamese cash is rare and expensive - The Historical Cash Coins of Vietnam by Dr. R. Allan Barker.

In your pictures are coins from China, Annam (Vietnam) and Japan.

The coin from the first post looks like a Java-Käsh, but the 2nd page does not fit. Therefore, most likely a forgery.

For comparisons without literature i recommend zeno.ru.

Pingu,

I know nothing about Chinese and other eastern coins, but I like to learn about all coins. I just wanted to say, your expertise is a very welcome addition to the forum here and I thank you for it.

Regards,
Virgil

Here is your last picture:
Obverse in Chinese = YONG ZHENG TONG BAO or Emperor Yong Zheng (1723-1735)- Circulation Money.
Reverse in Manchu  = BOO NAN or Minting office Nan of Hupu.

Hello,

The coins on the wooden board:

Arrangement:
1 Coin
3 coins
7 coins
7 coins
7 coins
4 coins

Classification:
1 = old Kanei tsuho (Ko-Kaneisen) Japan (1626-1668)
2 = new Kanei tsuho (Shin-Kaneisen) Japan (1668 - 1869)
3 = new Kanei tsuho (Shin-Kaneisen) Japan (1741)
4 = Vin lac thong bao Vietnamm/Annam (~1400s - ~1500s)
5 = Yong le tong bao China (1403 – 1425)
6 = not recognizable to me on this picture
? = not 100% safe

Assignment:
               1
          1 - 3 – 6
1 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2
1 - 6 - 6 - 1 - 1 - 2 – 2
2 - 6 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 2
       4 – 4? – 5 – 5

For a more precise assignment, better individual images with backsides, weight and diameter are necessary.
-----------------------------------
The reverse sides would be important for determining the coins in the picture with grey background. And weight and diameter... .
-----------------------------------

@Virgil H: thanks for the flowers :)

Greetings pingu
