So it's the Isaac II tetarteron SBCV 2004.

So it's the Isaac II tetarteron SBCV 2004.

Ross G.

Thanks Ross, hadn’t thought of that! It definitely seems to be based on SBCV 2004. Could it be an imitative issue? It is cruder and thinner than the ‘official’ issue (it’s also cup shaped). Also, what could the  :Greek_Phi: to the right of the Emperor mean?

Yes, the  :Greek_Phi: is odd - what does it weigh?

I’m afraid I don’t have the weight, but the coin measures 18mm.

Latin imitative?  Maybe that is not the Virgin?  How about 10.4 in Latin imitative DOC IV?

Thanks Simon. I think it could be a Latin imitative, but hard to identify which. The figure on the obverse is definitely the Virgin orans.

For comparison - the coin discussed above and an example of SBCV 2004, Isaac II tetarteron, from online.

Nice pic of tetarteron, that one is mine.

Looking at clbc he posts a latin coin similar to yours .11.35.2 , he had only seen one example and was clear in the notes his line drawing might be incorrect.

Very interesting, thanks Simon! I think that that is a different coin, but I think that the coin in question probably is an imitative issue, likely Latin. It’s especially the :Greek_Phi: that makes this coin hard to ID.

Congrats! That’s a lovely example of SBCV 2004.
