fake provincials
« on: June 02, 2008, 06:06:11 pm »
I don't like these at all,

First on is
"Diadumenian 218AD, Nikopolis AE30"

Item number: 110258825594 -

Source Bulgaria; Private bidding etc.  There are a few others there - all in great condition including a Claudius Albinus - all in the same condition -- warning flags all over the place

And a real one at the bottom.  There are two reverse dies of this type (that I know about) and this is not one of them.

"Roman provincial bronze coin Septimius Severus Marcianopolis, 193-211 AD, AE24mm"

This one is not as obvious but I have included it here as "guilty by association" - I am not familiar with the type

Yes - I'd like to see what the Septimus Severus dies for that type are - it could be OK.

I can't find a picture but I'm pretty sure I once had at least one coin with a very similar obverse die.
That Antoninus Pius is also not as obviously fake to me but judging from the similar surfaces it must be.

Here is a similar obverse die from my collection.  I can't find the pic of the reverse at the moment, but if I do come across it, I will post it.

I will leave the interpretation of this up to those more knowledgeable.

The 'pretty' ones are all pitiable, and poor Priapus has a wooden yard.  A lot of fakes powerfully reinforce my admiration for the ancients; these are such.

The Markianopolis Septimius Severus is clearly cast rather than struck and thus is also fake.
It looks very similar to the following coin:-

from the fake reports. Published: Prokopov/Paunov Sofia 2004, no.91

I have already started on the fake reports for these as well as a few other offerings by the same seller.

Martin

Reports have been generated for all the fakes identified in this thread.

Also for sale by the same seller at the same time were some fake imperials with the bronzes having been repatinated and crustified:-

A Septimius Severus aureus created from a combination of known fake dies

A well known Vetranio

A Prokopov published Licinius II

A Herrenius Etruscus that is new to me

A Laelianus that we already had an example of in the reports

There were a few Greeks most of which I won't bother with but this example from Thasos is new to me. It is a Centaur and nymph rather than the usual satyr and nymph. If anyone has a reference for this that I could add to the reports then it would be much appreciated.

Martin

'Crustified'.  I like that.  I hope the editors of the next edition of the OED read these boards.   ;D

Is the reverse of this coin an eagle holding a wreath?
If so i have this coin too.......
Same obverse anyway.
Recieved it with a certificate of authenticity and it still had some dirt on it.
I think its a die match on the front though.....
Rather than go through the trouble of  takeing new pictures atm i decided to pul the picture of it from ebay and save it to my comp, ill take pictures later and repost em.
