Does anybody know this coin? Looks like the obverse legend reads ... - AVPHLIOC, so I think it is Marcus Aurelius (as Caesar). I only have that pic, so can't examine the coin in hand.

Lars,

i suspect this is not of too much help, since this specimen is unattributed as well.
Moreover, sorry if you've already searched thruogh coinarchives.

Thank you Luigi, I had not found that one on Coinarchives. I think it may be of help as the condition is somewhat better than mine. I hope I will be able to ID it once I have it in hand; there may be some cleaning needed, though I like the sandy highlights.

Well, here's a better pic, I don't have the coin in hand yet, however. I'm still struggling with the reverse legend, TWN on top left? VLOV on lower right? I'll be grateful for any suggestion, be it about the reverse legend (city name, I suppose) or the reverse figure.

I hope it will be clearer once I have it in hand.

I purchased a second specimen, but unfortunately, I am still not able to identify the city. In fact, the piece leaves me clueless, though the legend seems to be pretty clear at first glance. But all I can read with certainty is the T..TWN on the upper left. So this is what I know:

Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, small AE unit (15-18 mm/ 3.25 g and 15-16 mm/2.36 g).
Obv: KAI - AVPHLIO(C), bare-headed, draped bust right.
Rev: young, childish looking figure standing left, arms at angle. The figure looks bearded on the Coinarchives specimen, though. End of the ethnic is apparently on top left, reading T..TWN. OY on lower right.

So we have: ....OY - ..T..TWN. Maybe YLOY on the lower right but that I am not sure about.

Any ideas?

Thanks to a fully attributed specimen on eBay, I finally found the attribution for my two coins shown above:

Marcus Aurelius AE, Magnesia, Lydia.
Obvb: KAI AVPHELIOC, bare-headed and draped bust right.
Rev: MAGNHTWN CIPVLOV, male figure or child standing left, holding fruits in fold of chiton.
SNG Leypold 1040, calling the figure "Pluto (?)"

Does anybody have any idea about the reverse figure, now that we at least have it attributed to a city? Why Pluto?

Ah yes, there we have Ploutos again, thank you. Probably the weather capriols that made me forget the old thread; the new one, I had not yet read.

Lars,

did you consider to contact the curators of RPC IV on line?
Perhaps they would be interested to show the picture of one of your specimens, since #1330 is unpictured so far.
