Harry,

I was just looking over my list of the coins needed to fill/finish my collection. Seems like when I concentrate on one coin, I get it, so I'm going to concentrate on Nepotian for now. Fingers crossed.

Hang in there and those coins will start coming your way, too :)

Regards,
mz

Hello Friends!

I've added another coin to my collection:

Nepotian. Usurper, AD 350.
AE22mm, 4.59 g. Rome mint.
Obverse: FL NEP CONST-ANTINVS AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Nepotian right
Reverse: GLORIA ROMANORVM, Nepotian on horseback right, spearing enemy; shield and broken spear beneath the horse, star in upper right field. Mintmark RS.
RIC VIII 200 var. (legend and bust type); LRBC 643 var. (ditto). (From Wildwinds)
RRR

The Usurper Nepotian was emperor for only 28 days, which explains the rarity of his coins. The dating of his usurpation is controversial. Traditionally it is dated to the year 350. Curtis Clay argued with good arguments for dating to the year 351. So far, there is no compelling argument for one of the two dates, but Aurelius Victor and the Epitome de Caesaribus support Curtis Clay's dating.

Sorry to note some problems on your coin:

I read obverse: FL NEP CONST...
And not laureate but rosette diademed.

Hair and beard looks tooled.

The good news is that the dating issue is clearly settled on 351.  All the evidence is laid out in my Koinon I article which can be found here:

Redating Nepotian's Usurpation and the Coinage of Magnentius

The bad news is that, after studying every Nepotian image I could find when writing my article, I am left with the opinion that there is a lot more tooling on your than the beard - the beard, hair, diadem, bust details, nose, field and lettering on the obverse all show worrying signs.  The rear has less problems but is still of concern.

Shawn,

A heavily tooled coin is definitely not something I want in my collection.

I will have to consider my options at this point.

Thank you for your reply and expertise!

Hello All!

You may remember that I had won a coin of Nepotian at auction a few months ago and posted it here.

Admittedly, I got caught up in the excitement of finding this rare coin and I didn't inspect the pictures as well as I should have.

Thankfully, the great people here on FORVM left comments correcting the error of my ways, as I had acquired a heavily tooled coin, something I'd prefer not to have in my little collection.

Today, after three months, the auction house, while not admitting/agreeing that the coin had been tooled, granted my request for a full refund.

So I'm out only about $20 US to send the coin back to the auction house in the EU.

Many thanks again to Pekka K. and otlichnick for their timely comments and expertise!

I owe you one, guys! :)

Regard,
Mark Zema

Glad it worked out.  Having doubts about a $5 or even a $50 coin in your collection is ok - but you don't want to be stuck with doubts about a real treasure.

Someday both you and I will have genuine Nepotians......someday.
