Unusual Antoninus Pius Sestertius with Syria
« on: December 19, 2009, 05:06:30 am »
I obtained this coin some time ago mainly because I didn't remember ever seeing one exactly like it. There are some recent auction listing for a similar type with SYRIA around the design but I can find no photos of this example with SYRIA below. Does anyone know anything more about this coin? I didn't think Antoninus Pius traveled much during his reign so why strike a travel coin?

RIC 590 lists the type with SYRIA around the edge, rated R, but on a side note, it mentions that SYRIA is sometimes in exergue, as in your coin. Now, how common or uncommon your variety is, I have no idea. Nice coin.

BM 1199, pl. 27.6 (rev. only, same die as yours).

Strack 799 cites this BM specimen, plus Rome, Naples, Vienna, and two in Paris.

Antoninus' province series commemorates not imperial travels, but the provincial donations of golden crowns to him for his accession, and his remission of half of the gifts offered.
