Valentinian II campgate
« on: October 14, 2003, 11:36:21 am »
The obverse inscription looks like -NVSPFAVG, which should make it Val II. Reverse -BLICE, campgate with two turrets, three layers, pellet in top of arch and above. Ex TES, gamma in L field. It should be RIC IX 62, but I can't see gamma officina listed for Valentinian.

Robert, I'll look in my RIC when I get home, but I think the RIC ix62 will be correct. Nice coin, cna I get you to post it in the Ancient Coin Vault, Gallery area? We have a good collection of Campgates started, and the more the better.
Note: There looks like a pair of vertically oriented pellets also, one at the top of the doorway, the other just above it. Also Beast Coins, lists an Arcadius with a G in the left field as RIC 62c.

Of course I'll post it once I'm sure of the ID. You're right about the pellets. I forgot to say that its Thessalonica mint, for those who don't know.

reverse = GLORIA REIPVBLICE  Ric 62 (has variants), but also RIC 65 (has variants) appears to exist with same attributes, not sure what difference is , maybe period of mint

only minted at Thess , according to :

I think this must  be RIC IX 62b which does have a Gamma officina letter left and TES in the ex, and no Chi-Rho, as long as the obverse legend is unbroken DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG which this seems to be (I can see a couple of letters before the ANVS PF..)
I just updated the list with all the campgates I could find in RIC IX. Couldn't find the one that is referred to in the index as being on "page 59". Anyone know which one they are referring to, Bruce ?

I think I may have one of these - but mine looks a bit barbaric - I'll scan it for the database when I have a minute, though mine looks a bit barbaric if you ask me.

The Cohen tells that GLORIA REIPUBLICE (campgate) has stayed coined ONLY from Theodosius I.
See Cohen - Vol. VIII - pag. 388.
.... it could serve.

There is a VALENTINIAN II in the sold section of the Forvm and it is RIC 62a. Thought that you may like to look at it. It is # 10066 third from the bottom of the page.

Wildwinds also has a picture of RIC 62a  http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/valentinian_II/_thessalonica_RIC_62a.jpg

That one's got no marks in the field. I don't see what it could be apart from RIC 62; I'll sort it out when I get back from work.

Is there any possibility that the Gamma is actually the bottom half of one of the letters in the left side of the legend that has been cut off ? Namely the "R" Depending on style and strike if cut off just so, could it make your Gamma? Just a thought? It probably is a gamma but I thought I would thow it out for consideration.

That was my first thought but the position is wrong; the inscription would cross the top left of the gate. The horizontal part of the gamma would have to be the upright, and there's no letter that fits. I can't make sense of it other than as a field mark.

I've put it down as RIC 62a, rated scarce. I'll put it on ACV as soon as I get a chance, probably the weekend.
