Carinus silvered Ant
« on: May 19, 2003, 11:28:18 am »
Hi everybody,

Just finished this Silvered AE Ant of carinus. (this is only my second Carinus)

My question is --- The obverse inscription of IMP CARINVS PF AVG is not listed with the AEQVITAS AVGG reverse. I also can't id the exergue as a valid mint mark.

Could this be a mule? As always thanks for any input

Hello, RIC V Vol. 2 lists IMP CARINVS PF AVG with a AEQVITAS AVGG reverse for the Lugdunum and Rome mints.  There is no mint-mark at the bottom for the first mint.  However, at Rome they struck ones with "KAZ", which is on your coin.  That would make it RIC V 239.

I looked it up in the intros in RIC V and here is what it is:

"KA" is the Greek equivalent of "XXI"
"Z" is for the 6th officina

I learn something new everyday with these coins :) .
