Trajan?
« on: January 09, 2007, 11:05:58 pm »
I would like to thank everyone in advance, You've been so kind in the past.
I recently came across this coin that has an incomplete legend and would like a second (or third or fourth....) opinion.
I'm fairly certain it's a Trajan 98-117 A.D. It's about 32mm Dia, 27.0 gm Bronze
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Naturally Trajan! Looks like the Sestertius RIC 492, Cohen 469, BMC 781. IMP CAES NERVAE TRAINO AVG GER DAC PM TRP COS II PP, laureate bust right / S.P.Q.R. OPTIMO PRINCIPI, Annona standing left, holding grain ears and cornucopiae; modius with grain ears and prow at her feet; SC.

Best regards

At first glance it is a Trajan, but I have doubts about this piece.  I have never seen a laurel branch like that on a coin of Trajan (at 5:00 on the reverse) - very odd.  Also the curve of Trajan's neck and the lettering seem unusual.

I agree that it looks suspicious. Look also at the curved ground line on the reverse, the modern looking letters on the obverse and the weird pointy nose; and what is that branch (?) to the right of Annona's feet?

Very suspicious, I must agree! The prow looks much more like a branch! Sorry!

Probably a contemporary counterfeit.  The surfaces and corrosion look ancient and authentic.
