Medieval?
« on: December 11, 2022, 10:44:14 am »

AE 22mm.  0.80g.

Is this a coin or something else?

Help is appreciated, thank you.

The figure kind of looks like Bronko Nagurski... can you post better pics of the devices/lettering? Some Lombardic influences maybe...

Hi folks,

In the legend in the first photo, I see: "...MAORAOTEP..." (or similar).

Yes, and because of that strange legend and the three rosettes on the reverse, likely a "Jeton de Compte" or "Rechenpfennig" of Nürnberg, Paris or Tournai, in my opinion.
Only a question of finding it  ;) !

In this catalogue (see frame), I found this "Rechenpfennig" with central "S", listed as number 52:

After my lunch, I will continue my search on this base, unless someone of yours does the job while I am eating  ;).

Burp ... sorry  :-[. On the specimen underneath, taken out of a series of Rechenpfennige of Numisbids, the obverse with S seems to be closer to that of our coin in this topic.
Only, the legend does not match yet:

Yes, now I see: there was a second one, in the upper right corner. Probably with the S upside down. But it does not bring us any nearer to the gaol:
Because they are so many and so different, Rechenpfennige are very difficult to match !
