Gordian III and Tranquillina - consular legate help please.
« on: October 26, 2021, 11:55:50 am »
I can’t see a match on the consular legate.  I’m not proficient at partial searching of the reverse legends .

Marcianopolis. Gordian III and Tranquillina (238-244). Ae.
Obv: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian and diademed and draped bust of Tranquillina left.
Rev: Asklepios standing facing, head left, holding serpent-entwined staff

Any pointers on the consular legate would apricated.  Are there lists of named individuals?
24.6-26.6mm 9gr axis 2hr
Thanks

There's no legate named on this coin, only the name of the city:

OVLPIANWN AGXIALEWN

ie Anchialus in Thrace.

If my memory isn't plying tricks on me, OVLPIANWN refers to Trajan under whom Anchialus gained city status.

Cheers,

It is this type: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/type/70879

The OVLPIANWN has been added to the city's name in honour of Trajan who's birthname has been Marcus Ulpius Traianus.
See e.g. in Ivo Topalilov, "The Foundation Myths of Anchialos Revisited", Il Mar Nero 10, 2019/2020, pp. 39-48:
