Large Roman Imperial - help ID?
« on: July 11, 2021, 10:11:03 pm »
Relatively Large Roman Imperial with not much detail.
Obverse: bust facing left (diadem?); Reverse: Soldiers and standard? No legends visible.
Diameter: 24.4 mm
Hadrian? Augustus? Dare I dream of Galba?

My first thought when I saw the head was Hadrian. The soldiers and standards type (if we are thinking of the same type) was struck much later on very much smaller coins.
If you think it looks like two people on the reverse, it could be, for example, Hadrian and another imperial figure shaking hands.
It's a shame that the original patina appears to be have been stripped - it may have shown more detail and bits of the legend.

Thank you very much for your insight. I'm glad to hear you agree with a first glance Hadrian identification. I was imagining the soldiers with standard, but 2 figures shaking hands (or sacrificing?) is certainly plausible. I'm going to crawl through the large types and see if I can find a candidate. Thanks again!

With these clues in mind, I've tentatively identified it as RIC 872 (Cohen11). I'm happy to hear second opinions. Thanks again.
