Ancient Greek Artifact
« on: July 09, 2021, 05:58:54 pm »
Dear members:

I came across this "ornament", 2 cm in diameter made of clay or alabaster. Most likely ancient Greek (xxx BC). I think it depicts goddess Europa on a white bull traversing across the ocean during her abduction by God Zeus. The reverse is blank. I do not know the weight. May not be a coin but an ornament. Found in south east India. Has anyone come across such an item; what was it used for, value rarity etc. Was it used for trading when Greeks arrived in the far east?
Thanks

Thank you. That's interesting. Hippocampi typically is horse-fish like. This looks like a bull with two horns with fish/dolphin tail at the back end. So this points to Aphrodite riding taurokampi (fish-tailed bull)? Could this be a coin mold or an on object? what was it used for, ceremonial or gift?

I think it depicts goddess Europa on a white bull traversing across the ocean during her abduction by God Zeus.

Roman mosaics depicting the scene.

The scene is frequently depicted on coinage.  Here's a link to the members gallery,  where Benito posted his beautiful specimen and quoted Ovid; other great variations on the theme will appear with "Europa" search
