Yesterday I discovered that somehow, I uploaded a picture of a different coin that had been offered in the same auction out of which I bought my piece.

I have modified the original message of April 24, above, to delete the incorrect image and added the correct image of MY coin, as well as changing the link to it in my gallery.

Here, again, is my actual coin....

It's been a little while since I posted anything new here, since it's also been a while since I've been able to buy anything new.  Prices for some of the more common types have increased by at least 50% recently.

That being said, here's the one lot I was able to buy recently out of an auction.

It's a cute little 1/24th stater from Phokaia.

It's been a little while since I picked up any new pieces, mainly due to the drastic increase in prices, which I had to figure out whether or not I wanted be a part of.  Guess who won?

Here are two most recent purchases....

More information can be found in the GALLERY under each coin.

These early ones fascinate me. I find it hard to wrap my brain around the fact that there was a time before money and these were the first people to invent it.

I have been slowly working my way through the collection and uploading images as they are ready.  Here are the two latest to be uploaded to my gallery.

It's been a while since I posted here, as new acquisitions are becoming more difficult to find (or rather afford) due to the serious increases in price these early pieces are bringing at auction.

But I was able to snag this one recently.  Check out the gallery for more details.

It's been a little while since I've added anything to my EL collection, as I've been concentrating on a few other areas.  Here is my latest addition, a 1/12 stater from Kyzikos.

Very interesting collection! I love the early little EL coinage. I recognize quite a few of your specimens.

I'm wowed by your gallery of Early Electrum.  Such fine specimens!
Just think: that other Anaximander (he of Miletus, c. 610 BC - ?) could have handled a few of them in his lifetime.

Thank you, Anaximander, for the kind words.

That is part of the intrigue of ancient coins.  Where did they travel and who handled them.  Many of the coins in my collection show definite signs of use, as opposed to having just sat in some government treasury as a store of wealth for the ruler of the day.  Personally, that adds a bit to their allure for me.  I'm actually actively looking for some specimens that display banker's marks.  What better indication, other than wear, that they actually were actively used in commerce.

I agree with you on banker's marks. In addition to that and wear, I would add test cuts. I try to imagine how that process may have went between buyer and seller. Plus, who kept the cut piece? I assume the seller.  But, I like test cuts unless they really mess up a coin.

Nice reasonably priced coins are becoming more difficult to acquire.  But I was just able to pick up this early piece from Kyzikos.
