Commodus, Troas, Published? type
« on: May 22, 2015, 11:04:50 am »
Can anyone please tell me if this Commodus AE 17mm from Troas is a published type?

The reverse seems to be the oxen ploughing scene (known from various types) with TROA in ex.

Thank you!

Elias

Yes, that looks like thew same coin although I wouldn't agree with the Adramyteum attribution. The TROA is clear on my coin and
I can make it out on the online example too.

Hi Elias!

In Bellinger no coin is listed for Commodus from Alexandreia/Troas with ploughing scene. Pekka is right with Parion. The legend in the ex. of the coin depicted in RPC IV online is the same like on your coin. You misinterpret it as TROA.

Bst regards
Jochen

Hi Jochen,

I agree that the legend in RPC online looks the same as mine but it still looks like TROA to me. Here is a comparison of 2 other coins of
Commodos (from Alexandria in Troas) with TROA in ex. and mine below. Let me know what you think.

Looks like the RPC online coin is from same dies, and reverse
legend reads above oxen: COL AVG.

Dear Elias, Pekka K, & Jochen,

Here is an older discussion worth reading:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=94667.0

It looks like all three coins were struck from the same die pair.

Hope this helps.
