Hello All!
This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time.
I'm one of those wrong-headed fools who decided to go for a Roman Imperial portrait collection :'(
While I know that I'll never collect them all, I've decided to collect the ones that I can collect with my limited means.
My gallery will showcase what I believe the be the best of my collection. More will be added as time goes by.
Please follow the link to my portrait gallery:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=17499
Your comments are appreciated :-)
Regards,
Mark Z.
Fool for the Ancients ;)
-
Ah, a man after my own heart! I also have this endeavor for two reasons: 1) it allows me to browse all periods of coinage regularly, and 2) it will take me a literal lifetime to afford a nearly complete collection (some unatainables will obviously be absent). You have some fine specimens there!
Best, Noah
-
verynice, love that Hadrian setertius
-
Even if it's a portrait collection, can't you post the whole coin anyway?
It always feels wrong seeing a picture of half a coin.

...I'm one of those wrong-headed fools who decided to go for a Roman Imperial portrait collection :'(

Here’s wishing you a Good Journey Mark. I’m very new to the world of ancients, but I have been collecting Early European Coins most of my adult life, so I can say this from years of experience; “it is the journey that’s the reward”. I know I’ll never complete my collection of Roman Imperial Denarii, but completion is not my goal. If my aim was to form a complete set, I would collect US Franklin Half Dollars. Great hunting!
-
Hello All!
Thanks to all for the compliments so far :-)
Yes, Ariech and Noah, I will republish with the reverses. Check back later today :-)
mz
p.s. Noah: I agree, it's an endeavor that will not get stale anytime soon, will it?
p.p.s. Bud: You are right! Isn't it funny how when the current coin arrives, there's a moment of exultation, then slip it into the book, and then it's time to forge ahead ;-)
-
Hello All!
OK, the coins have been republished with the reverses, plus a few more.
Information is lacking on most with regard to size and weight, but if you're interested just let me know. I can always add that :-)
I'm sorry to say that I couldn't retain your kind comments and ratings, though.
Once again, your comments are appreciated!
Regards,
mz

Good Morning All!
Submitted for your approval are 3 late Roman bronzes:
Majorian
Basiliscus
Libius Severus (Severus III)
Somewhat lacking in the portrait department, but you know how it goes with these, right?
Enjoy!
Mark Z.
-
very nice coins! Am I right that the exergue is partially on the basiliscus coin?
-
Hi Snork!
Thanks! :)
Yes, looks like the top half of the "O" of "KOC" at bottom center. I have not cleaned this one at all, but the "C" seems to be to the bottom right.
mz
-
I'm not usually into nummi; but very impressive! How much did the Majorian set you back?
My Severus III was $150 or so and mine is in crummy condition.

Cliff,
PM sent.

Mark, I'll say it again; I really enjoy looking at your collection, thanks for sharing.
i have to agree with Bud. even though Roman coins aren't really my thing, i thoroughly enjoy browsing through your gallery Mark.
what impresses me the most is the quality and the great variety, especially the harder to find emperors and usurpers. obviously a labor of love, and it shows.
my sincerest congratulations.

Very nice [for a Postumus sestertius]. Not something that, usually, overly grab my attention but I really like the centering on this one. A perfect flan (and strike) for the dies.
-
I'm one of those wrong-headed fools who decided to go for a Roman Imperial portrait collection :'(
While I know that I'll never collect them all, I've decided to collect the ones that I can collect with my limited means.
Regards,
Mark Z.
Fool for the Ancients ;)
Well Mark, I've said it before, but I must repeat that I admire your collection. I too am attempting to put together an Imperial Collection. I also know that I'll never have a "complete collection", but it is going to be fun building one.
By the way, the way you're going you just might complete yours.

by the way, that's quite an impressive collection you have!
mz

Indeed a very nice addition to your fine collection :)
I'm really drawn to the large bronze coins. Maybe its because they are easier to see with my aging eyes :'( But I also like the substantial feel of worth they exude! Nice portraits are always attractive to me as well.
Congrats! Steve
-
Steve,
Agreed on both points! :)
While I cannot stand pocket change, it must have felt quite good to have some of these large bronze coins jangling around in one's pocket or leather bag.

Happy Friday All!
Today's addition:
What I thought was the most common/ordinary of coins turned out to be something quite different:
Valentinian I RIC IX 26a var. (Thessalonica)
Here's a note from Dane (Helvetica) @ Wildwinds.com:
A rare mule with a Valentinian I obverse and Gratian reverse,
this is the second one I know of. dk
(Thank you, Dane!)
This one turned up in a pile of uncleaned coins (and puts me somewhat at odds with my position regarding purchasing uncleaned coins!) ;)
mz
-
Congratulations on your great find Mark.
-
Happy Monday All!
Today' addition:
A very sharp and beautifully toned Valens siliqua (MUCH nicer than the photo shows, this being the best I can do with 6.0 MP).
RIC IX 27e.2 Trier, RSC 109b.
2.06 g, 12 mm x 13 mm.
Rated Scarce.
Your ratings and comments are appreciated on this and all the coins in my gallery (link below) :)
Thanks for checking in!

Congratulations on your great find Mark.

That makes TWO coins out of the 1000 or so I've cleaned in the past 5 years that I've kept ;)

Hello All!
You might not think that Constantius Gallus coins are very exciting (and neither would I!), but this latest addition to my gallery made me change my mind:
Constantius Gallus Maiorina
RIC VIII 306 Siscia, rated Scarce
4.85 g, 21 mm x 22 mm
Your ratings and comments are, as always, much appreciated!

Very nice bust of Constantius with fine hair style. :)

Happy Holidays All!
Please allow me to present to you my Xmas gifts to myself:
1) Aemilianus AR Antoninianus
RIC 2b var., C 25 var.
2.71 g, 22 mm
Extremely Rare
Note from Richard Beale:
RIC only lists coins with DIANAE VICTRI, though it does mention a coin with "DIANE (sic) VICTRI" in Berlin. I suspect that the Berlin coin is actually the same type/dies as [this one] but without the reverse's final two letters showing.
Three known including this one: One in the Eauze Hoard, one in a private Italian collection, and this one.
As you may (or may not) know, my stated goal is to go "big bronze" but due to its significance I had to have it.
2) Galerius AE Follis
RIC VI 42 Cyzicus
6.46 g, 26 mm
A beautiful follis with nice silvering remaining
Please follow the link below to my gallery and click "Date -" in the upper right corner to bring these 2 to the top.
Your comments and ratings are appreciated!

Hello All!
Very proud am I to present to you my latest acquisition:
Valentinian II Solidus
RIC IX 67b.2 Constantinople, Depeyrot 47/5.
4.43 g, 21 mm.
Rare.
I was told that the deposits could be removed but I kind of like them as they seem to add additional depth to the devices, like a 3D effect.
I especially like the reverse where you can really see the prow in 3/4 view.
Your comments and ratings on this and my other gallery coins are appreciated!
Regards,
mz
-
I agree Mark. The ‘deposits’ accentuate and don’t detract (or distract) from the images. Nice pickup.
-
A golden coin is always nice, Mark. :)
But in my opinion it was cleaned sharply. :( (or sharply cleaned?)
Best Regards
Andreas
-
Andreas,
Not mentioned in the description but I respect your "eye" and opinion :)
Seems that it's difficult to pick one of these up without having some nicks and dings, though, isn't it?

Hello All!
I've been looking for a big Augustus bronze with a nice portrait for some time now, not realizing how difficult it was going to be.
And finally here it is.
Divus Augustus AE As
RIC I 81 (Tiberius-old RIC). Cohen 228, Sear5 1789
10.73 gm, 28 mm
Your comments and ratings over at my gallery (link below) are appreciated!

That is a fantastic coin! Love the portrait Mark, nice....:)

Very nice coin, Mark. :)

Gentlemen,
Thank you all! :)
mz

Great clear interesting coin, but what is it ?
I always believed radiate croen on AE meant dupondius, but I only thought that came in with Trajan?
Not that AE and Roman is in anyway my area of knowledge,
I guess the doors symbolise Augutus's mausoleum....?
Cicerokid
-
I believe Nero was the first to try using the radiate crown as a denominational marker. in this case, it refers to divinity.

CK,
Yes, you're correct, I forgot to ID the type. It's an As, and yes, the reverse depicts a large altar with unknown items on top.
This was minted by Tiberius deifying Octavian/Augustus, his adoptive father.

Hello All!
Just received this one courtesy of Joe and FORVM:
Diocletian
Silvered follis, RIC VI Trier 677a, cf. RIC VI Cyzicus 22-3, EF, weight 10.854g, maximum diameter 27.9mm, die axis 180o, Cyzicus mint, 305 - 307 A.D.; obverse D N DIOCLETIANO FELICISSIMO SEN AVG, laureate bust right, wearing imperial mantle, olive branch in r., mappa in l.; reverse PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG, Providentia on left standing right, extending right hand to Quies, who is standing left with branch in right and leaning on scepter in left, S F across fields, KS center, PTR ex
This one drew my attention not only because of its obvious visual merits and rarity (R1) but also because of its interesting history:
This is perhaps one of the most unusual issues in the entire follis series. It is nearly always attributed to Trier (Treveri), but a comparison of portrait styles and an examination of follis hoards reveals that this issue was not struck in Trier but in Cyzicus. Two officinae struck this issue, and the KS in the field between the two figures is actually the mintmark, not the PTR. A look at the coins of Cyzicus (RIC 22-23) shows that the same two officinae struck this issue without the PTR also. The Senior Augustus issues of Diocletian and Maximianus were struck at every mint currently in operation. Apparently, the first coins of this type were prepared at Trier and examples were sent to the various mints for the individual mints to copy. At Cyzicus, the die engravers copied everything, including the Trier mintmark and put their own mintmark in the field. Eventually someone soon realized the mistake and new dies were prepared with the mintmark in its proper location. (notes from FORVM website)
Sure enough, it is incorrectly listed in RIC under the city of Trier!
One thing that was very hard to bring out in the pic is the beautiful, shiny silvering but in hand it is a joy.
Also posted in my gallery. In other words, your comments and ratings are appreciated! ::)
Enjoy!
mz
p.s Thank you, Joe!
EDIT: Also notable is the fact that this coin comes from the collection of "maridvnvm" (Martin) of FORVM. It just keeps getting better!
-
Hi Mark,
you are alive! :)
Nice to read from you again.
Your new coin is stunning. Full silvered?
Regards
Andreas
-
Hello my friend!
Yes, fully silvered, a little thinner in the fields around Dio's head and as shiny as a new silver dollar.
It should be duly noted that this coin is from the collection of "maridvnvm" (Martin) of FORVM, so a great coin just became stellar.
Thank you for checking in :)
Regards,
mz
-
Your Diocletian ia a real stunner Mark.
-
Hey Bud!
Thank you! I thought so, too.
I think it was listed on FORVM for less than 24 hours. Once I saw it, I knew owning it was a fait accompli ;)

How did I miss your Birthday? Shame on me :(
LRB's lie beyond my current area of interest, except for those with nice desert patina and detailed intricate designs. Oh looky there, your's seem to have those properties, what a coinsidece ;D
I particularly like the bull emerging from the dust cloud, gazing at the stars! Very nice!
-
Hey Steve!
Thank you!
The Jovian didn't photograph nearly as nice as it looks in-hand.
However, I'm very satisfied with how the other two came out.
The Theo I, in particular, I am very happy with. A very large coin for the era.

First, I wanted to thank all of you for your comments on my recently uploaded coins.

I did want to showcase this particular coin, my latest acquisition:

Hello All!
Here's another little gem I just received in the mail today:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-72251
It's unfortunate that the pics tend to pick up that which you don't see when you're holding something like this in your hand.
Then again, maybe I shouldn't have sharpened up the pic so much!
Still, it's very pretty in hand and a welcome addition to my collection.
Your comments and ratings are welcome :)

Hello All!
I've been keeping an eye out for a nice-looking coin of Tacitus and here it is:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-73483
It fulfilled all of my requirements:
1) mostly silvered (>95%)
2) large (23+ mm)
3) nice portrait (I think this one is very nice!)
Thanks for your past and future comments and ratings!

p.s. this one was very hard to photograph. I must've taken 15 pics total to get the luster just right.

Hello All!
It's been a while (3 months, to be exact!) since I've posted one of my little treasures here.
I'm proud to say that this dupondius of Domitian is now a part of my humble collection:

Hello Friends!
As promised, here is my latest acquisition, a birthday present from my wife to me and courtesy of the boss, Joe S. and FORVM:
Gallienus antoninianus:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-83582
As you may (or may not) know, I am a big fan of "big bronze." However, I am also attracted to rare coins or rare variants.
This coin is from the Antioch Hoard of Gallienus.
This variety is not listed in RIC without a branch or SPQR in exergue.
It is one of only two cited in MIR, the other having apparently been sold in a mail bid some 20 years ago by Mr. Alex Malloy.
I could not find any evidence of other examples using Coinarchives.com, acsearch.info or Wildwinds.com
If you know of any, I'd be happy to incorporate that information.
Also, it might be added, it's a very nice coin just based on it own merits, being rated as "Choice EF" by the FORVM staff.
Your ratings and comments are much appreciated!

Hello Friends!
I'm back with yet another coin that I thought I would never own but, happily, fate has smiled on me.
Behold the usurper Uranius Antoninus!
SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Emesa. 253-254 A.D.
BI Tetradrachm (26mm, 11.38 g, 6h).
OBV: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right.
REV: Eagle standing facing, head and tail right, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; S C in exergue.
Baldus, Nachtrag Ξ/ξ = Prieur 1058 var. or corr.
The reverse legend on the current coin appears to end [...]YΠAT B, whereas Prieur notes the specimen published by Baldus ends [...]YΠATO B. It is not entirely clear from the photograph in Baldus.
Near VF, earthen deposits, peripheral roughness on reverse. Perhaps the second known.

Hello Friends!
I'm back (nearly a year later!) with my latest acquisition (something I expected at this point in my collecting scheme).
This particular coin has changed hands several times in the past few years but I can assure you that it has found a home for the foreseeable future. :)
Say hello to the usurper Martinian!
Martinian AE Follis
RIC VII 16 Cyzicus, VAGI 3037

IM C S MAR MARTINIANVS P F AVS

Jupiter standing left, holding Victory on globe in right hand & sceptre in left; to left, eagle standing left, head right with wreath in beak; to right, bound captive seated right.
Rev. R. field: X / IIΓ
Exergue: SMKA
Rated R4 in RIC
As far as I can tell, there are only three specimens with this attribution known, all three being on acsearch. This coin is one of those and is duplicated on WW. CA has none (but I'm not a premium member over there). If you know of any others, I'd appreciate the knowledge.

Quick story about this coin:
I had been looking/watching/waiting for a coin from this particular emperor/usurper for over a year. This one came up in the latest printed auction. I placed a bid online. After watching the live bidding, I thought I had been outbid but I misunderstood the auctioneer. I received an email maybe 5 days later congratulating me. I gotta admit, I was pretty excited :)

Hello Friends!
I've added another coin to my collection:
Nepotian. Usurper, AD 350.
AE22mm, 4.59 g. Rome mint.
Obverse: FL NEP CONST-ANTINVS AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Nepotian right
Reverse: GLORIA ROMANORVM, Nepotian on horseback right, spearing enemy; shield and broken spear beneath the horse, star in upper right field. Mintmark RS.
RIC VIII 200 var. (legend and bust type); LRBC 643 var. (ditto). (From Wildwinds)
RRR
The Usurper Nepotian was emperor for only 28 days, which explains the rarity of his coins. The dating of his usurpation is controversial. Traditionally it is dated to the year 350. Curtis Clay argued with good arguments for dating to the year 351. So far, there is no compelling argument for one of the two dates, but Aurelius Victor and the Epitome de Caesaribus support Curtis Clay's dating.

Sorry to note some problems on your coin:
I read obverse: FL NEP CONST...
And not laureate but rosette diademed.
Hair and beard looks tooled.
Pekka K
edit: from ERIC
-
The good news is that the dating issue is clearly settled on 351. All the evidence is laid out in my Koinon I article which can be found here:
Redating| |Nepotian's |Usurpation and the |Coinage of |Magnentius (https://www.academia.edu/41214464/Redating_Nepotians_Usurpation_and_the_Coinage_of_Magnentius)
The bad news is that, after studying every Nepotian image I could find when writing my article, I am left with the opinion that there is a lot more tooling on your than the beard - the beard, hair, diadem, bust details, nose, field and lettering on the obverse all show worrying signs. The rear has less problems but is still of concern.
SC
-
Shawn,
A heavily tooled coin is definitely not something I want in my collection.
I will have to consider my options at this point.
Thank you for your reply and expertise!

-
Hello All!
You may remember that I had won a coin of Nepotian at auction a few months ago and posted it here.
Admittedly, I got caught up in the excitement of finding this rare coin and I didn't inspect the pictures as well as I should have.
Thankfully, the great people here on FORVM left comments correcting the error of my ways, as I had acquired a heavily tooled coin, something I'd prefer not to have in my little collection.
Today, after three months, the auction house, while not admitting/agreeing that the coin had been tooled, granted my request for a full refund.
So I'm out only about $20 US to send the coin back to the auction house in the EU.
Many thanks again to Pekka K. and otlichnick for their timely comments and expertise!
I owe you one, guys! :)
Regard,
Mark Zema

Glad it worked out. Having doubts about a $5 or even a $50 coin in your collection is ok - but you don't want to be stuck with doubts about a real treasure.

SC
Sean,
I just had to show this to you especially.
Remember the coin of Nepotian I won at auction almost two years ago and then returned as it had been excessively tooled? Well, it showed up again at auction a few months later at the same auction house, and then it just showed up again in mid-February at another auction house, slabbed. As you may recall, I paid approximately $1,600 for it in June 2020. Check out the hammer price this time.
mz
-
and worth every $ in my opinion, with smoothing and tooling by Leonardo da Vinci, just at the time of Salvatore de Mundo needed re-doing.
-
Isn't NGC supposed to mention things like tooling?
Virgil
-
Never mind, I see where it says smoothing.
Virgil
-
and worth every $ in my opinion, with smoothing and tooling by Leonardo da Vinci, just at the time of Salvatore de Mundo needed re-doing.
Heh heh. The really sad part of this transaction is that the major portion of the hammer price is for the plastic slab.
mz
-
Never mind, I see where it says smoothing.
Virgil
The question then becomes, was it smoothed to conceal the tooling? (Does anyone know if "tooling" is a word that NGC uses when describing a coin?)
To me, it looks exactly the same as when I had it in hand, but in this picture, who can tell what's really going on inside the slab?

Sad!

Very rare, a key rarity in the late Roman series. Struck on a slightly short flan as usual and with some areas of weakness, otherwise, very fine, VF, cabinet tone, extremely rare.
