Title: New Stavraton of Constantine XI
Post by: glebe on March 02, 2021, 01:46:42 am
Readers may have noticed that an example of the stavraton of Constantine XI (below) is now being offered by a well known auction house.
This coin was not among the coins in the hoard documented by Bendall some years ago in the Revue Numismatique, and so it seems to be the first new example of this type to turn up since that hoard appeared.
According to the auction write-up the obverse die matches that of Bendall coins 77-81, but as far as I can see it seems to be a new die.
On the hand the reverse die matches Bendall 77, as stated.

Very nice specimen with a very clear legend where it counts.

A few new Constantine XI coins have appeared in the last couple years. I wonder if someone found a hoard — someone smart enough to not dump them on the market all at once like the hoard of Irene Syracuse solidi a few years back.

I'm not aware of any other new stavratons appearing in the market, although there may have been some. There have of course been a number of new 1/8 stavrata offered (some seemingly genuine, some clearly not).

Incidentally it seems that the reverse images of Bendall 81 and 82 have been swapped in Bendall's article (it's hard to be sure given the poor quality of the images in the original article which have probably been trimmed for publication).
