Metapont stater

I brought this home from an otherwise disappointing coin show and thought I'd share it here since it got lost in all the new gallery additions.

Lukania, Metapont, stater
ca. 530-500 BC
27mm, 7.80g
obv: META; ear of barley in dotted border
rev: incuse ear of barley in a border of rays
(Noe 114)
ex. Künker Auction 83, lot 63 (17.06.2003)

It's a big and impressive coin, I didn't know before I saw it that they were this big.

yes, these early ones are quite large. this is one of those 'must haves' i think, with the incuse style so peculiar to Magna Graecia.
very nice addition Andreas, but won't it dwarf all those tiny little fractions?   ;)

A nice, well centered coin. I too have been looking for a decent (and affordable) one. No luck so far...

If I could afford it I'd have many more large silvers. All these 'must-haves' alone, there are so many of them. But I'm really happy with this one, even though I've never come home from a coin show with so few coins.

well, quality over quantity is an excellent mantra in the field of ancient coins.   8)

A great looking coin. I have looked at images of these and drooled over them for many years. I am now officially jealous.

Very nice.  I agree with Martin.  I'm jealous as well.  Very nice addition.

I had no idea they were so large either.  How thick is it?

Also is it my imagination or are these Metapont staters generally well-centered coins?

Rev. is often a problem from those I've seen.
