Beirut Museum Reference Wanted
« on: November 17, 2021, 11:47:20 am »
Beirut National Museum (M. Chehab no. 354)

Beirut AUB Museum (no. 83)

I am looking for images of the above cited coins (tetradrachms of Arados) held by these two museums. Are there publications, online or printed hard copy, for these museums?

It is still available:
https://www.aub.edu.lb/aubpress/Pages/TheCoinCollection.aspx

only costs $20, however, the postage by registered airmail is about $35 and it is not possible to change the mailing method. I just ordered one. They only accept Mastercard and Visa as payment.

I received my copy a couple of days ago. But could you give more information about the coins you are looking for ? No. 83 in the AUB catalog by Baramki  is an AE of Trajan from Askalon, not a tetradrachm from Arados.

Hi Dane,

I have been advised by another freind who has the AUB book that the coin I was seeking there is not illustrated. I was using Frédérique Duyrat  ‘Arados Hellénistique: Étude historique et monétaire’  (2005), where Coin Number 3206, D35-R151, is cited as "Beyrouth, AUB Museum, no. 83. 29mm"

Pictured below is the coin for which I am seeking a reverse die match. It is Duyrat obverse D35. So far I've been able to rule out Duyrat R146, R147, R148. I have not yet seen images for Duyrat R149, R150, R151.

Phoenicia, Arados. Circa 138/7-44/3 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 15.23g, 1h). Dated CY 152 (108/7 BC).

I looked on CoinArchives Pro and your coin (your actual coin) is listed twice. No others have the same obv image /rev date combination

First time
CNG Auction 88, Lot 497, 14th Sept 2011.
Duyrat 3199-206 (obv. die D35); Rouvier 271; SNG Copenhagen -; BMC -; SNG Lockett 3212 (same obv, die); Pozzi 3050 (same obv. die).

Second time
CNG Auction 102, Lot 627, 18 May 2016
Duyrat 3199-206 (obv. die D35); Rouvier 271; HGC 10, 72; DCA 772. EF. From the Allan Smith, M.D. Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 88 (14 September 2011), lot 497.

None in any of my indexed pdfs.

PS I was unable to add the following lines to my last post, it kept timing out:

Rouvier lists this as
271. Mêmes  types.  Au  revers,  la date  BNP, letter (like a 9 as on yours), et  :Greek_Theta:C.
(an 152),
AR  27.  - Tétradr . Attique,  gr.  15,63.  Ma collection. - Babelon:  loc cit. No 1072. Mionnet: .  t .  V,  No 775  et  t. VIII supp. No  366.  - Beger :  Thes.  Brand., I,  p. 404 . - Collect.  Univ. amér.  Beyrouth.

Dane,
Thanks for this detailed information and your time to find it. I don't have CoinArchives Pro, only the 'skimpy' version. I'm surprised there are no other coins on that website with this obverse/reverse. Good to know.
