The coin on the left is a
plated ancient
fake (
fourree) inappropriately combining the
obverse of M. Vargunteius (130 BC) with the
reverse of M. Aburius (132 BC). I have seen more than one
mule involving this
reverse so I suspect a counterfeiter in the day was going out of
his way to protect himself from later accepting
his own
fakes by making them easily identifiable to someone "in the know".
The other appears to be more normal - a
denarius of Ti. Veturius (137 BC).
