« on: November 15, 2012, 07:10:18 am »
as you know during elagabalus the denarius was heavily devalued and isses of large bronzes were scarce

here s a sestertius and an as from this period

Ric 284 roma seated dated 218ad
and ric 337 adventus 222ad

provenance sotheby`s on behalf of the british museum (part of a collection that was bequeathed)

any opinions are welcome

Rick,
That was a great sale I got some interesting pieces out of it as well but I was not after this one so I did not help you pay more for it.

I was on the Net I had them send me pics on about 30 lots I ended up with 5 lots total about 330 coins as I like the bulk stuff keep what I want sell the rest and get my money
back.I have had good success with that.I would like to have bought a lot more but I need lots of cash to do that.

Early portraits of Elagabalus sure do look like those of Severus Alexander

Sestertius: interesting for showing Elagabalus' first dated titulature,

PONTIF MAX TR P, which was then followed, in connection with the same Roma seated rev. type, by

P M TR P COS P P and then, in 219,

PONTIF MAX TR P II COS II P P.

The obv. die seems to be new to my casts, which is however not saying a lot, since I only have casts for Elagabalus from about five important collections, so only a small sample of the total surviving material.

As: rev. P M TR P III COS III P P of 220, so RIC 311. This As comes both without and with star in field, this die is without, I have casts of a fine specimen from the same dies in Klosterneuberg, Austria.

I'm surprised the BM didn't keep this coin, since as far as I know they don't have it. Maybe they misread the tribunician number (they have TR P V), or they thought it was too corroded to retain?

thanks curtis !

the as came in a holder with ric 337 on it so they probably misread the legend , unfortunately is in a poor state
