Hasmonmean help please
« on: March 15, 2012, 08:29:57 pm »

Hello,
I've just added this to my small collection of Biblical coins. However, even though I've carefully read & reread the Hasmonean section of Hendin, I honestly can't decide how to identify this coin properly. Can you help me? I'd greatly appreciate any & all feedback.

Its Jannaeus.  I have attached the script.  Reading will come easier with practice, no worries.

After some practice, you may also see that this cornucopia style is very typical of Jannaeus.

Oh, sorry.  I would say it is a Hendin  1145.

Unlike many other coin types, Hasmonean coins are often crudely cut by apprentices who did not spend too much time focusing on copying the master dies exactly.  This means that the number of lines may vary, as well as spelling and styles.
Hendin classified Hasmonean coins by general style and small differences from the plates and drawings are very common.
