Greek Numbers

(1/1)

Mayadigger:
Ave!

Can anyone tell me how Greek numbers work; ie 1-10?

I have a number of Pantikapaion coins with date numbers and I'd like to be able to attrubute the Roman emperor via the date marks.

Thanks,

K

AVE,

I may not be answering what you are asking but I belive they go:

1    A   alpha
2    B   beta
3    G   gamma
4    D   delta
5    E   epsilon
6    S    stigma  (best I could do is the S that one will not go the Greek)
7    Z    zeta
8    H    eta
9    T    theta  or possibly epsilon delta as a two letter
10  I     iota
11  IA   a two letter for 10 plus 1

You can see them as they were minted on the site www.probvs.info  and go to the mintmark icon and then to the "numerals" hot button.

Hope that helps.........Chip

AVE MD,

Glad that was what you were looking for.............Chip

Just to add a couple to Chip's list:

K = 20
M = 40

Hence the letters on the half-follis (20 nummi) and follis (40 nummi).  This also shows why KA in the exergue of post-Aureleian reform antoniniani is equivalent to XXI on others.
