An interesting Maurice Tiberius follis
« on: April 25, 2010, 04:08:11 am »
Recently the following coin was offered on e-bay (I was outbid  :-\ :( >:().
It is a pitty that we have not a clear legend (that is why my offer was not very strong ;))
but I believe the inscription on it should have been something like:
(DN MAV)   RC PP AVI
If so, it can not be Sear 511.
I have attached a clear copy of Sear 511 so that the differences to be obvious
In such a case what do we have here?
A new type?

Thomas,

If any thing the upper coin in question seems to have a rather sloppy quality about it. Was not the Nicomedia at this time often producing coins with often irregular inscriptions?

That or what is the prevalance of non-offical mints of this series?

Hi cw!

Was not the Nicomedia at this time often producing coins with often irregular inscriptions?

Here I think we have something out of the norms. Not irregular...

That or what is the prevalance of non-offical mints of this series?

This was my first impression when I saw the coin.
I haven't found any references of non official "Nicomedia mint" coins though.
I still believe that this is the case, therefore-if correct- this is an unlisted type.

Do you agree with my "speculation" on the inscription?

You should check the latest volume of Wolfgang Hahn, a revised edition of MIBII. I can do it for you on Tuesday, when I'll have access to this catalog.

Of course I consulted the a.m. catalogue (MIBEC). I did that even before bidding for this coin.
On plate 29, coin 149, we can see a similar coin of Moneta Militaris Imitativa,
BUT the mint is "Constantinople" and not "Nicomedia".
The coin I posted here is not listed in his catalogue and I have not found it anywhere else either.

Did you also check the Moneta Militaris attributed to Tiberius II ?
