First Cleaned/Attribution Confirmation
« on: March 13, 2007, 04:36:06 pm »
Hi everyone!

I just finished cleaning up two coins, the first two uncleaneds good
enough to go in the collection for me (I'm rather new). I was just
wondering if anyone could confirm my attributions, as I'm pretty sure
they're correct, but it being my first time, plus the fact I don't
know a whole lot about late Roman bronzes...So, here goes(oh, and by
the way the size and weights are guesstimations, so please don't put
any faith in them), also I apologize for the picture quality I'm
still trying to get better equipment to use. the first is:

Coin type:   Roman Imperial
Ruler:   Constantine I (Augustus)
Coin:   aVF Bronze (AE-3) Follis
Obv: CONSTAN- TINVS AVG - Laureate head right.
Rv: PROVIDEN- TIAE AVGG - Campgate: two turrets, no door, star above,
7 rows.
Exergue/Mintmark: SMKA
Mint:   Cyzicus (324-325 AD)
Wt./Size/Axis: 3.00g / 20mm / -
References:   RIC VII 24 Cyzicus

The second is:
Coin type:   Roman Imperial
Ruler:   Constans (Augustus)
Coin:   VF Bronze (AE-3) Follis
Obv: CONSTAN- S PF AVG - Rosette diademed, draped and cuirassed bust
facing right.
Rv: VICTORIAE DD AVGGQ - Two Victories standing facing eachother
holding wreaths and palm branches, in lower center: palm branch
upright.
Exergue/Mintmark: ASIS
Mint:   Siscia (347-348 AD)
Wt./Size/Axis: 2.80g / 17mm / -
References:   RIC VIII 195 Siscia

Thanks in advance for the help!
Jonathan

P.S.- any comments or criticism about the cleaning job would be
appreciated so that I can get better.

You did a great job, keep it up. cleaning take pracitce. A scanner does a very good job of producing pictures of coins, at a very low cost. I recommend the you check the many threads on the "Coin photography" area.  You need to learn how to brighten up the pictures and make them larger, it helps if the coin is about 2 inches [ 50 mm] or so in diameter. That makes the deteils much easier to see. Check this thread https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=34910.0

yea thanks. I actually do use a scanner, and I thought about lightening them, but somewhere I read an argument where people were saying that someones coin was "overcleaned" but he really had just lightened it.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Jonathan,

Your coins don't look over cleaned and lightening them will not produce bare metal that is characteristic of over cleaned coins. Besides, wouldn't you want to know if you were over cleaning your coins?

You can always add the disclaimer saying that the image was lightened to make viewing better.
