Caracalla silver quinarius - Not in RIC?
« on: March 24, 2006, 02:20:24 pm »
Hello to everybody,

can someone help me with this Caracalla silver quinarius? I haven't found it on RIC: at number 281 are listed only a Denarius and an Antoninianus. So is this quinarius reported for the first time?

Thank you very much,
best regards

I think it looks more like a limes denarius than a quinarius

I agree with Joe, a limes denarius.  The diameter of the border of dots on a quinarius should be 13 mm not 16 mm.
No quinarii of Caracalla are known from the period after his introduction of the antoninianus in mid-215.  Of course that doesn't guarantee that none were in fact struck during those last two years of the reign!!
