Yes, that is why likely a chest decoration.  But some later belt plates had hinges for the buckle plate.  I am not sure if the early first century square plates did or not....

Ave Shawn and Jay!

Well, that's a new one for me...but I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

If it's chest decoration, can you explain to me how the henges worked and why? Would it have been on leather armor of some sort?
What timeline are we talking about here and is there any attribution number or type, please?

Again, if it's a belt plate the same question as per the henges, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Never mind, I found it! Belt Plate.

Vindonissa Catalogue, Table 36, # 906 variety.

Can you post an image of that?

Sorry no image but the legend at the bottom of the page reads:

Verteidigungswaffen, Gürtelblech or in English - Defensive Weapons, Belt Plate
