Cilbani or not ?
« on: December 07, 2021, 10:41:34 am »
Dear All,

Long time since I asked any questions here. Hope somebody can help. I just acquired this Roman Provincial. It was sold as a Antoninus Pius AE 17 Cilbiani 3,50 g. However I can't get the legend to match. Has it been correct determined ? Or is it of another city ?

Obverse
Isn't much to read except for the emperor, laureate, lint at the back of his head, legend indiscernible

Reverse
It seems to be KI(Lambda)N / (Omega)N. Seems simple. But as far as I have been able to check Cilbani never had this shortening of oits city name.  Depending on how you light the coin however legend could also be KMN. Making it KMN / (Omega)N.

Any help greatly appreciated !

Thanks
Michael van der Lee / NL

Dear Michael van der Lee & Board,

It took some time to decide between Tium (ΤΙΑΝΩΝ) and Cius (ΚΙΑΝΩΝ), but the latter eventually won out.  From Isegrim:

   39. Coin description(16601) (bookmark)
   Place and time
Area:                   AM
Province, Region:   BITHYNIA
Place of minting:   CIUS
Minting period:   Between 193 and 211
   Obverse
Legend(G):           AYT.. SEP..
Legend(G):           ΑΥΤ.. ΣΕΠ..
Type:                   PORTRAIT MAN R / SEPT. SEVERUS
Attributes:           WREATH LAUREL / BEARD
   Reverse
Legend(G):           KIANWN
Legend(G):           ΚΙΑΝΩΝ
Type:                   WOMAN STANDING HR(1) / HYGIEIA(1)
Attributes:           PATERA(1) / SNAKE FEEDING(1)
   Technical details
Metal:   AE
Diameter (mm):   20.00(1)
   Bibliographical references
this coin:                   WADD RG S320,54(1) / COLL IMHOOF(1)
   Free text
additional remarks:   VS: AYT.. SEP.. RS: KIANWN

For your convenience, I am also attaching the relevant pages from Rec.   As you hopefully can see, the Imhoof-Blumer coin is a clear match to the specimen posted here.

Hope this helps!
