Trebonianus Gallus - antoninianus - mintmark?
« on: December 05, 2021, 11:46:57 am »
Hi, on this Trebonianus Gallus - antoninianus, the mintmark looks a bid odd.
Is it a hole in the matrix that makes this odd mintmark, or is it a mintmark that I can´t find?

OCRE calls them control marks.
On your coin 3 or 4 dots.

Hi Pekka, so you don´t think that the mark (as high as a letter, not a hole) before the three dots, is´nt a smached letter, but just a damage in the matrix that makes this "letter/mark.

Based on the centerline of your coin, I suspect it's 3 dots and the artifact to the left of the dots is either the result of a die break or a corroded die.  There is similar damage above the V in VBERITAS that extends over to the beading.

As a pure guess, with as rightly mentioned the center line of the coin as a reference, four dots (°°°°) is also a possibility, with as an exemple HCC V n° 48 Plate 87 ( for Volusian).

Am I just being paranoid, or does this coin look like a cast to anyone else?

I would want to see rim details before concluding anything, but trebonianus' coins had a high copper content and are susceptible to corrosion pitting.

Here is a pic of the edge.
On the edge there also is a very small spot (less than one mm., so not easy to take pic.) wher the silvering is missing, and it shows that the core is Billon.
