Gold Content of some northern Lion Head Electrum coins.

Gitler et al list five lion head types on the Phocaean weight standard (Group 13). Two of these (57 & 58) are from a type group that includes hektes and the other three (59-61) from a second group of smaller types.

The interesting point is that the first group features gold content figures of 61 & 63%, while the second group shows a significantly higher range of 68-70%, confirming perhaps that they are somewhat earlier issues.

In all cases the low Cu figures suggest that little or no copper has been added to the alloy.
